Force a Group Policy Update in Windows
Last Updated 5 years ago

These steps will force Windows to update computer and user Group Policies. This can be a good troubleshooing step in the face of unusual issues or if expected settings aren't getting applied.

  1. Open the Start menu by clicking on it or pressing the Windows key.

  2. Type or copy-paste gpupdate /force then press Enter. (You don't need to click into any box or field. Just open Start and start typing.)

  3. A black command prompt window will appear. Wait for the GPO sync to fully process.

  4. You may be prompted to reboot or log out. Press N then Enter to avoid only logging out.

  5. Restart the computer.

  6. Log back in to ensure any newly synced policies are applied.
