Frequently Asked Question

How to take a screenshot
Last Updated 6 years ago

Windows

Use Win + Shift + S for the new built-in Windows screenshot tool. This tool gives you the option to take a rectangular screenshot, a freeform screenshot, a screenshot of just one window, a screenshot of your entire screen, or close out of the tool:

It will automatically copy your screenshot into your keyboard, where it can be pasted directly into the helpdesk, an email, or a document. You can also mark it up to highlight things, circle things, or make annotations, if you click the notification that comes up in the lower right corner of your screen:

Here's a short demo of this tool in action. The markup program will be familiar if you have an interactive whiteboard or interactive display and use the Snip & Sketch or Sketchpad features in the Windows Ink menu:

iPad

You can take a screenshot on you iPad by pressing the home and lock buttons simultaneously. If you need to crop the photo, that can be done in the iPad Photos app or the Google Photos app. If you want to mark up the image, there are a bunch of apps out there that will do this. Google Keep has some nice markup tools, and it's already installed on your iPad by us, but there are plenty of others, too.

Chrome OS

To take a full screen screenshot on Chrome OS, press Ctrl + Show windows (image). A notification will appear giving you the option to copy your screenshot to your clipboard, and from there you can paste it into email, the helpdesk, or a document. If you want to mark it up, you can try out Chrome Canvass and choosing New from image. You can also use Google Keep, Google Docs, or any other markup tool of your choice.

You can also take a screenshot of a portion of your screen using Ctrl + Shift + Show windows (image).

You can view a full list of Chrome OS shortcuts on Google's support site here, and you can view more information about the Chrome OS keyboard layout here.

macOS

There are a few screenshot options in macOS:

  • View onscreen capture controls: ⌘ + Shift + 5 (this is probably the easiest option)
  • Full screen: ⌘ + Shift + 3
  • Select an area or window: ⌘ + Shift + 4 (then use Spacebar to switch between rectangular capture mode and window capture mode)
Apple also has a support page on screenshots, which you can view here.
